Győr is the most important city of northwest Hungary, the capital of Győr-Moson-Sopron County and Western Transdanubia region, and—halfway between Budapest and Vienna—situated on one of the important roads of Central Europe. It is the sixth largest city in Hungary, and one of its seven main regional centres.

Győr is the third richest city in Hungary in terms of monuments. The Vienna and Budapest fascinating, diverse city located midway between the gentle surroundings array of architectural, cultural and natural treasures. The city offers tourists attractions from the Romanian- based Baroque basilica through eclectic public buildings to excellent works of modern architecture. The reconstruction of the baroque core of the city ​​center has been recognized with the Europa Nostra Prize for Monument Protection .

With regard to guest nights spent in commercial accommodation establishments, the 10th most popular settlement in Hungary with 358 thousand guest nights (2012); its largest sending markets are Germany (93 thousand), Romania (14 thousand) and Austria (10 thousand). 

The historic churches, palaces, museums, characteristic corner balconies and narrow spaces of the city center invite the visitor to walk. The ecclesiastical monuments in and around Győr are the memories of millennial Christianity . The Basilica ( Basilica minor ) and Bishop’s Castle on Káptalandomb are symbols of Catholicism in Western Hungary. A multitude of believers take a pilgrimage every year to the image of Our Lady shedding bleeding tears in the Basilica. The dreaded treasure of the Basilica is also the hermit of the “Golden Head”, St. Ladislaus . The cult of St. Ladislaus and the cultivation of the common Benedictine traditions of Győr and Pannonhalma also hide serious opportunities in church tourism.

The city’s population in 2003 erected a monument to Polish soldiers ( 1939 – 1945 ).

Sports life 

Győr has a long tradition and excellent facilities in the field of competitive and leisure sports. However, conditions have deteriorated in both areas since the change of regime or have not developed properly. The 2017 Summer European Youth Olympic Festival was held here .

Aquatic life 

The city of rivers used to have a lively leisure and aquatic life. Formerly famous water sports associations and sites have largely disappeared. The great water sports traditions also seem to be lost. Competitors in Győr or of Győr’s origin continue to produce outstandingly in competitive sports every year. The Graboplast Water Sport SE 2007 reached in 1981 after the biggest success.
