Izola General Hospital (IGH) is one of the hospitals in Slovenia which provides health care services at the secondary level. The hospital is organized in four major medical divisions, namely: Division of Surgery, Division of Internal Medicine, Division of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and the Paediatric Division, in addition to the Division of Medical Services. The mission of IGH as a public health institution is public health consideration in a broader area of Primorska. In addition to treatment in a narrower sense, IGH also organises the activities in the field of prevention, awareness raising, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.
In IGH, comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical care at the secondary level of organised health care services is provided for the population of the coastal region.

DIVISION OF SURGERY
The beginnings of the Division of Surgery date back to 1949 when a civilian hospital started to operate in the building of a children’s sanatorium constructed at the tip of the Izola peninsula in 1927.
Surgery was taken over by Dr Štrukelj, a surgeon from Trieste, together with his assistant. Since the end of 2008, Dr Malden Gasparini has been the head of the Department of Surgery.

DIVISION OF GYNECOLOGY AND OBSTETRICS
The beginnings of the Division of Gynecology and Obstetrics were in 1954. Gynecology maternity department was located in the monastery at Santorijeva Street in Koper. In 1997, it moved to new premises of Izola General Hospital along with the Pediatric Division and Pathocitology.

The first patient was admitted to the Children’s Department in July 1952.
Paediatric nursing covers one of the most extensive areas. It includes the knowledge of Internal Medicine, Infectology, Neonatology, and knowledge of various surgical disciplines as well as it is aware of the particularities of various developmental stages of a child. This is the expertise a nurse needs to work with children.
Nursing care is provided in the Paediatric department, Paediatric Surgery and in all paediatric outpatient clinics.

IZOLA EMERGENCY CENTRE (IEC)
Izola Emergency centre (IEC) is a department of Izola General Hospital combining the secondary outpatient treatment of urgent states. It was established on 22 February 2013.
Patients who request examination in the emergency unit; however, their condition is not urgent according to the medical criteria, will be regarded as self-paying.
