Talence is a town in southwestern France , located in the Gironde department , in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region . It borders on the town of Bordeaux. Its inhabitants are the Talençais .

Talence is part of Bordeaux metropolis . It is the densest of the Bordeaux suburbs and the fourth most populous municipality in Gironde.

Talence hosts a large part of the Bordeaux university campus. It is home to the Sciences and Technologies college of the University of Bordeaux (formerly Bordeaux 1 University ) and many schools, engineering schools ( Arts et Métiers ParisTech , ENSC , ENSEIRB-MATMECA , Sup-Agro-Bordeaux , Institut Optique d’Aquitaine ), business schools ( KEDGE BS ) and architecture ( ENSAP ).

The city of Talence is a city of services, the tertiary sector is very largely in the majority, even exceeding 90% of the working population. Agriculture is almost absent and industry is very weak in this university town.


Talence is a wine-growing town located in the heart of the Graves vineyard. Wines can be produced in its geographical area: AOC Pessac-Léognan, AOC Crémant de Bordeaux, AOC Bordeaux Supérieur, AOC Bordeaux, AOC Graves and AOC Graves Supérieur. This vineyard is made up of 3 estates: Château Haut-Brion , Château La Mission Haut-Brion , Château la Tour Haut-Brion .

  • The former Auberge de Plume la poule , 2 rue Pacaris: from the Middle Ages until the creation of the boulevards, the inhabitants of Talence had to pay a fee (the grant ) to bring goods into Bordeaux. Several small premises were located at each barrier to collect this tax. A higher commercial tax was levied if one wanted to sell live poultry. A song in Gascon is dedicated to this inn.

The botanical garden 

The botanical garden is a small botanical garden located in the Parc du Château Peixotto at 3 avenue Espeleta, in Talence. The park is open daily at no cost, but the botanical garden itself is only open to students and professionals.

The current garden belongs to the University of Bordeaux . It contains around 2000 species of pharmaceutical and medical interest, including many Cucurbitaceae, Cyperaceae, Malvaceae, as well as two greenhouses, an orangery and a classroom building. The orangery preserves a general herbarium of 108 boxes and several herbaria of regional interest such as the Tempère herbarium.

Talence is an important city in the world of athletics because it organizes the Décastar athletics meeting , dedicated to the combined events of heptathlon and decathlon . This meeting takes place at the stadium of Thouars.

At the same time as this competition, the association for the development of combined events and the meeting of Talence (ADEM), which is responsible for the organization of the Décastar, has been participating since 1981 in the training of young high-level athletes through the “College Athletes”.

  • the CREPS (Center for sports resources, expertise and performance) Bordeaux, located in Talence, is one of the oldest centers of its kind in France. Created inMarch 1941, it was originally intended for the training of teachers in EPS , and in 1985, it was transformed into the CPEF (Permanent Training and Training Center), currently renamed as a High Level Pole, or more commonly “Pôle France “.
