The city is notable for its economic boom experienced during the industrial revolution in the xix th century, thanks to the textile .
It is nicknamed “the city of Broutteux “.
Lines of communication and transport
Establishment by the European Metropolis of Lille (MEL) , an automated metro line brings together many municipalities around Lille . A tram line serves from Tourcoing the towns of Mouvaux , Wasquehal , Marcq-en-Baroeul and La Madeleine , then arrives in Lille. In addition, fourteen bus lines, including two LIANE , a high-level service line serve all the border towns of Tourcoing.
Tourcoing has 25 V’Lille bicycle rental stations , self-service bicycles, which means 200 bicycles are available as well as equipped cycle paths.
Teaching
Tourcoing drains most of the students from its population pool, which is made up of the more or less bordering municipalities of Roncq , Neuville-en Ferrain , Halluin , Mouvaux , Linselles , Bondues , Bousbecque and Comines.
Tourcoing has three prestigious secondary schools, historically linked to the city: for private Catholic education , the Institution Libre du Sacré-Coeur , for public education in France, the Gambetta State High School. And the Colbert digital high school, nationally recognized, also public.
The University of Lille is present in Tourcoing through its Plastic Arts Department, as well as the IUT B (or IUT de Tourcoing).
